The Department of Psychiatry and Psychotherapy treats adults with mental problems or disorders. A particular focus at the Jewish Hospital has always been the
treatment of addiction. Another focus is on the treatment of depressions. The head of the department is one of the leading national experts in this field and is specialized in the therapy of treatment-resistant depressions.
Other psychiatric disorders are also treated, including anxiety and panic disorders, obsessive-compulsive syndromes, manic-depressive illness, dementias, schizophrenic and non-schizophrenic psychoses, stress reactions, and personality disorders.
Patients suffering from dependence to alcohol, medications, other drugs or multiple drugs can be admitted for withdrawal therapy. This therapy follows the principles of a „Qualified Withdrawal"; whereby time in the hospital (from one to three weeks) is not only spent on the medical detoxification. In addition a psychotherapeutic process is implemented to search and treat the underlying background of the dependence, to strengthen the power and motivation for a life free from addiction, and to develop realistic concepts for a future drug-free life. After discharge from the hospital, therapy is continued in a rehabilitation setting. This is mostly conducted in an ambulatory or partially ambulatory setting (day hospital). The Department of Psychiatry and Psychotherapy runs such an ambulatory treatment center. There is intensive co-operation between the efforts of group session therapy, which takes place daily in the hospital, and among many other institutions dealing with addiction outside, so that a plan of care can already be put in place during treatment at the Jewish Hospital.
Numerous psychiatric diseases can be treated successfully today, and can sometimes even be prevented. For the treatment of our patients we rely on a team of doctors, psychologists, nurse-educators, social workers, physiotherapists and dependence therapists, ensuring a differentiated diagnosis of psychiatric symptoms. Not only is the mental illness treated but also its physical, psychological and social manifestations. A daily and weekly therapeutic plan is handed out and explained at the beginning of treatment. Importantly, we also include the patients’ relatives in the therapeutic process.
